South Hilo Patrol Officers responded shortly after 4 p.m., after receiving a report that crew members of the Pride of America cruise ship, docked at Pier 1, had observed what appeared to be a body floating in the water near the ship's mooring. The condition of the remains suggests that the body had been in the water for some time.

Detectives with the department's Criminal Investigations Section are continuing the investigation, which is currently classified as an unattended death. An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death has been scheduled for Friday (September 26).
