During the week of January 1-4, 2004, Big Island police arrested 13 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 13 DUI arrests, compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 86 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 24 major accidents so far this year, compared to 33 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent.
There have been no fatalities so far this year, compared to none for the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
