During the week of January 5-11, 2004, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 33 DUI arrests, compared to 17 during the same period last year, an increase of 94 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 78 major accidents so far this year, compared to 73 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been no fatalities so far this year, compared to two for the same period last year. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to one at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
