During the week of January 17-23, 2005, Big Island police arrested five motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic collision.
So far this year, there have been 36 DUI arrests, compared to 67 during the same period last year, a decrease of 46 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 129 major accidents so far this year, compared to 137 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.
There have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none for the same period last year. There have been no alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
