During the week of February 9-15, 2004, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash, and four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 125 DUI arrests, compared to 88 during the same period last year, an increase of 42 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 276 major accidents so far this year, compared to 281 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.
There have been four traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to two for the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent. There have been no fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to one at this time last year. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
