During the week of August 29-September 5, 2005, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and five of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there has been a revised total of 728 DUI arrests, compared to 692 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,602 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,648 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.
There have been 24 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 for the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent. There have been 13 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to eight at this time last year, an increase of 63 percent. There have been nine drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
