During the week of December 15-21, 2003, Big Island police arrested 32 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and eight were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 1,024 DUI arrests, compared to 847 during the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. The numbers arrested by district follow:

There have been 2,296 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,189 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There have been 33 fatalities so far this year, compared to 27 for the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. There have been six fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to 11 at this time last year, a decrease of 45 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
