During the week of January 1, 2008, through January 7, 2008, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 18 DUI arrests compared with 24 during the same period last year, an decrease of 25 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 27 major accidents so far this year compared with 55 during the same period last year, a decrease of 51 percent.
So far this year, there has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island compared with two during the same period last year, a decrease of 50 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
