During the week of March 4, 2008, through March 10, 2008, Big Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Seven were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 261 DUI arrests compared with 246 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 364 major accidents so far this year compared with 446 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with nine during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
