During the week of April 25-May 1, 2006, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and five were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 373 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 307 during the same period last year, an increase of 22 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 848 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 794 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.
There has been a total of 13 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 14 for the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
