During the week of April 29, 2008, through May 5, 2008, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 474 DUI arrests compared with 441 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 641 major accidents so far this year compared with 759 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 12 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
