During the week of May 16-May 22, 2006, Big Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 434 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 365 during the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,001 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 944 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There has been a total of 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 15 for the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
