During the week of May 26, 2009, through June 1, 2009, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 550 DUI arrests compared with 586 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 681 major accidents so far this year compared with 770 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.6 percent.
So far this year, there were 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 11 during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
