During the week of July 4-July 10, 2006, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 623 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 516 during the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,321 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 1,267 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There has been a total of 18 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 17 for the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
