During the week of July 30, 2012, through August 5, 2012, Big Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 819 DUI arrests compared with 850 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 858 major accidents so far this year compared with 811 during the same period last year, an increase of 5.8 percent.
So far this year, there were 23 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 53.3 percent.
To date, 12 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (1), or a combination of both (6).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
