During the week of August 29-September 4, 2006, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 831 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 685 during the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,726 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,607 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.
There have been a total of 26 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 23 for the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
