During the week of September 12 – September 18, 2006, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 876 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 711 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,812 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,720 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There have been a total of 27 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 28 for the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
