During the week of September 16, 2008, through September 22, 2008, Big Island police arrested 12 motorists for drunk driving. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 999 DUI arrests compared with 956 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,263 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,533 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.
So far this year, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 27 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
