During the week of September 23, 2008, through September 29, 2008, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 1,022 DUI arrests compared with 985 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,303 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,566 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.
So far this year, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 29 during the same period last year, a decrease of 34 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
