During the week of September 26 – October 2, 2006, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been a total of 929 DUI arrests compared with a revised total of 740 during the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been a revised total of 1,897 major accidents so far this year compared with a total of 1,806 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.
There have been a total of 28 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 29 for the same period last year, a decrease of 3 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
