During the week of September 27, 2010, through October 3, 2010, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 1,179 DUI arrests compared with 1,033 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,045 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,192 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.3 percent.
So far this year, there were 22 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent.
To date, 20 fatalities this year were related to drugs (11), alcohol (10) or a combination of both (6 of the 20).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
