During the week of October 10, 2006 – October 16, 2006, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 978 DUI arrests compared with 783 during the same period last year, an increase of 25 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,964 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,905 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 29 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 29 for the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
