During the week of October 17, 2006 – October 23, 2006, Big Island police arrested 14 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 992 DUI arrests compared with 793 during the same period last year, an increase of 25 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 2,009 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,950 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.
There have been 29 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 29 for the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
