The father of a 9-year-old boy was arrested for assault Wednesday (August 23, 2000) after police arrived at the family’s residence and found the child severely injured.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Puna patrol officers responded to a report of an unresponsive child at a Naele Street address in Pahoa, Puna.
An investigation revealed that the boy’s injuries were consistent with physical abuse, and the officers arrested the father at 12:45 a.m.
The child was taken to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment, but at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, the victim was flown to the Kapiolani Women’s Center on Oahu in extremely critical condition.
The father is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending further investigation.
