A man apparently drowned Monday (August 20, 2001) in waters off King’s Landing in Hilo
Responding to a 1:20 p.m. call of a swimmer in distress, a fire rescue helicopter pulled the man’s body from the ocean about 20 minutes later. The victim was later taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 2:45 p.m.
Police said the man apparently had been fishing alone on the shoreline when he fell into the water.
They are withholding his name pending notification of next of kin.
Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and have tentatively classified the case as a public accident.
