Police will be stepping up DUI and seat belt checkpoints throughout the Big Island during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.
Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section noted that more people are on the roads during holidays and police want to ensure the safety of drivers and their passengers.
According to national statistics, a total of 31,910 people died in traffic accidents last year. More than half of the victims had failed to use their seat belts, and 40 percent of all traffic fatalities involved alcohol.
