A 19-year-old Waimea male apparently drowned Saturday (September 15, 2001) while swimming with friends at Piihonua Falls in Hilo.

Responding to a 12:30 p.m. call, fire rescue personnel tried to unsuccessfully to revive the youth. They took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:58 p.m.

Police have tentatively identified the victim, but are withholding his name until they can make positive identification.
